UEFA Demands Accountability After FIFA Quietly Drops Privatization Plan

European soccer's governing body welcomed FIFA's reversal — then immediately called for heads to roll over a secretive deal that nearly sold off the World Cup.

Driving the news: FIFA officially abandoned its plan to sell a 20% stake in FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). The new subsidiary would have commercialized FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. UEFA called the reversal a victory. It also called it a warning.

What UEFA said: In a Saturday statement, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin's organization demanded accountability for 'secret plans fast-tracked' by anonymous actors. 'No option should be ruled out,' it said. 'FIFA's current leadership has lost the trust of UEFA — and of many others across the football family.'

By the numbers: FIFA's reserves exceed $5 billion. UEFA says none of it has been deployed for the development of football. The privatization plan would have sold a stake in the sport's crown jewel to private investors.

The breach: UEFA reproduced Infantino's own 2016 campaign words: 'FIFA's money is your money.' It concluded bluntly — he broke both promises. The deal was 'opaque, backroom, and anything but transparent.'

What's next: UEFA says it will work with confederations worldwide to reform how FIFA resources flow through the existing FIFA Forward program. It wants reserves deployed at the grassroots level across all 211 FIFA member countries.

The bottom line: This was a governance failure dressed up as a financial innovation. A $5 billion war chest, managed in secret, nearly ended with the World Cup pledged to private investors. UEFA stopped it. Now the harder question: who built the plan, and who let them? Transparency demands names — not just a policy retreat.
