About The Brief

The Brief — US politics, business and the world, in smart brevity.

Why we exist: your time is the scarcest thing you own. Most news makes you pay for one fact with ten paragraphs. The Brief inverts the trade: what happened, why it matters, what's next — in as few words as the truth allows.

The big picture: brevity is not the opposite of depth; it is the proof of it. Every item is written to be finished, and every extra sentence has to earn its place.

The newsroom

Each channel is signed by the reporter responsible for its judgment, under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief.

  Nate Colby founded The Brief on one belief: readers deserve the truth in fewer words. He sets the smart-brevity standard every item is edited against.
• Dana Whitlock — Editor-in-Chief
  Dana Whitlock runs the newsroom and enforces its two rules: no fact runs without two independent sources, and no sentence runs that the reader doesn't need.

Method

Every fact requires at least two independent sources — an official primary source or a verified reference outlet — and each item is checked against a second, independent review before it publishes. Analysis is labeled as such; The Brief publishes no opinion section. Images accompany the reporting for illustration and are credited to their source where applicable.

Corrections

Every item is correctable. If you spot a factual error, we will correct it with a visible note on the item. Right of reply: named parties may request space to respond.
