Driving the news: FIFA president Gianni Infantino withdrew his FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal after a wall of opposition. The plan would have sold 20% of the World Cup's commercial rights to private investors. Thrive Capital — led by Joshua Kushner — was the lead investor lined up.

By the numbers: - $30 million: Infantino's reported annual salary under the deal, per journalist Martyn Ziegler of The Times - $5 billion: FIFA's current estimated reserves - $20 million: the extraordinary per-federation payout the project promised for 2027 - 55: UEFA member federations that unanimously threatened to boycott future FIFA competitions

Between the lines: UEFA called the project 'shoddy, opaque, and cooked up behind closed doors.' It said Infantino 'has not fulfilled' his two founding promises — transparency and member ownership of FIFA's assets. CONCACAF rejected the proposal outright. The AFC demanded proper consultation. Conmebol asked for more information.

Reality check: UEFA is not declaring victory. Its statement was blunt: 'The task of rebuilding trust in FIFA has only just begun.' FIFA elections are scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco. Infantino's position looks weaker after adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned.

The bottom line: Infantino blinked. But UEFA's message is structural, not transactional. Football's governance problem — opaque deals, concentrated power, misaligned incentives — does not disappear when one bad proposal is shelved. The next twelve months will test whether the sport's institutions can enforce accountability, or whether the next scheme simply arrives with better packaging.
